General Massage Benefits
Everyone can enjoy the benefits of massage treatment: from infants; to the elderly; and everyone in between – and whatever your activity and type of occupation. Massage promotes relaxation and good health by maintaining physical form and to help rehabilitate injury. Massage can reduce the effects of stress on the body such as: bad posture, muscular overuse and chronic pain. Massage can promote healthier circulation; improve posture by realigning the structure of muscles and the skeleton; calm the nervous system; and improve the effectiveness of the respiratory (breathing) system. Massage feels great and can make a difference to the lives of people with chronic pain and/or depression.
My Massage Services
6. Remedial Sports Massage
You don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports massage. Everyday people who take part in sports and fitness are starting to understand the importance of massage because of the role it plays in addressing wear and tear on the body. A constant build-up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments and tendons as well as the muscles. Sports massage helps to alleviate stress and tension, which builds up in the muscles, therefore restoring balance. If received regularly it can help prevent injury.
Some of the benefits of sports massage are:
- Improved range of movement and flexibility;
- More effective processing of lactic acid and other by-products of exertion;
- Decreased muscles spasms and muscular tension;
- Reduced risk of injury;
- Less recovery time between workouts;
- Improved sense of well-being.
Treatments last up to an hour. Clients should be prepared to change down to their underwear, as they would do with normal massage. Remedial sports massage isn’t a ‘passive’ treatment where the client lies on the couch in the same position throughout. Sometimes clients may have to move in different positions (e.g. seated as well as lying) and they may have to engage certain muscle groups (to provide ‘resistance’) at certain times.
7. Holistic (Swedish) Massage
Treatments are between 60-90 minutes. This tends to be about healthy blood flow; engaging the lymphatic system and promoting relaxation. Massage oils are generally used.
8. Tui Na (Chinese Medicine) Massage
This treatment tends to be carried out either through clothing or directly on the skin, and last up to one hour. Generally, I take a pulse reading at the beginning to help indicate which meridian (or channel) may require treatment.
A Tui Na massage works on the physical and emotional body, holistically balancing life energy (known as qi) throughout the person. Tui Na involves a variety of techniques to unlock life energy in the meridians which flow up and down the body. The principles of Tui Na massage are similar to that used in Chinese acupuncture.
Tui na can treat acute or chronic pain, such as those caused by musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. It helps the body’s natural ability to detoxify itself by stimulating the lymphatic system. It also helps with lactic acid dispersal (a by-product of exercise) and as a result can improve training and performance for athletes.
9. Pregnancy Massage
I offer pregnancy massage to clients after the first trimester although pregnancy massage is particularly beneficial in the third trimester, not just to relieve aches and pains, but also to prepare the body for the birthing process.
Clients change down to their underwear and receive treatment in a side-lying position. (Face down treatments using adapted massage couches are no longer used). I use towels and bolsters to make sure that the client is comfortable and relaxed throughout. The treatment tends to be an hour but may be up to 90 minutes depending on needs.
If there are any previous issues with pre-eclampsia or other potential risk factors then please consult your doctor prior to treatment.
Pregnancy is a time of excitement and joy but places strong demands on a woman’s body. I treat women during pregnancy to help in the following ways:
- Relieve physical tensions on the body, for example caused by extra weight and due to the shift in the body’s centre of gravity;
- Soothe the nervous system and helping to decrease cortisol levels;
- Boost energy by improving circulation and freeing up the lower back.
Benefits of pregnancy massage:
- Decreased leg and back pain and pain in pelvic area;
- Increased circulation and reduced swelling of the hands and lower legs;
- Lowered anxiety & depression;
- Decreased levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine;
- Increased levels of the “feel good” hormones serotonin and dopamine;
- Improved sleep.
